Region
Lombardia
Italy's richest, most modern region — Milan, the northern lakes (Como, Garda, Iseo, Maggiore), and alpine valleys. The food and art are serious here too; they just sit behind a more workaday face.
The verdict
Lombardy is the Italy of business, design, and the lakes — less obviously postcard-pretty than Tuscany but with the country's best mountain-and-water scenery within a short train of a world capital. Come for Milan (2 days), the lakes (a week), or the alpine north. Skip it if you only want medieval hill towns and Renaissance art — go to Tuscany and Umbria instead.
Why go
Milan's energy and the northern lakes — Como, Garda, Maggiore — the most glamorous water in Italy.
Skip if
You're chasing the classic medieval-hill-town Italy; that's not here.
