Rome's region, and most travelers never get past the capital. Beyond it: Etruscan tombs, volcanic lakes, hill towns like Civita di Bagnoregio, and a coast that improves once you leave the city behind.
The verdict
Most visitors come for Rome and leave — and that's fine, Rome alone is worth a week. But Lazio hides a worthwhile second trip: the gardens of Tivoli, the lakes of Bracciano and Bolsena, and the dying-on-a-rock town of Civita di Bagnoregio. It's a region to revisit once you've done the capital, not a substitute for it.
