Sardegna
An island apart — not really Italy, by its own reckoning. Nuraghic stone towers, the Costa Smeralda's glamour, the wild east coast, and a sheep-and-bread cuisine unlike the mainland. You need a car and time.
The verdict
Sardinia is for travelers who've done the mainland and want something more rugged and self-contained. The beaches are among the best in Europe (Cala Goloritzé, La Pelosa), the interior is empty shepherd-country, and the food is its own thing. It's expensive to reach and hard without a car, but it's the most distinctive island trip in Italy after Sicily — and less crowded.
Why go
Europe-class beaches, a prehistoric Nuraghic interior, and a cuisine built on bread and suckling pig rather than pasta.

You don't want to rent a car or take a ferry/flight; Sardinia doesn't work by public transport alone.
