Molise

Region

Molise

Italy's least-known region — a sliver of mountains and Adriatic coast that most travelers drive straight through. No major sights, few tourists, and a stubbornly local way of life.

The verdict

Molise exists mostly to be the answer to 'what's the least-visited region in Italy?' There's little here you can't find better elsewhere — but that's the point for some travelers. Campobasso and the Adriatic Termoli are quiet, the mountains are empty, and you'll have them to yourself. Go only if you're stitching together Abruzzo and Puglia and want the road less traveled; don't restructure a trip for it.

Why go

To say you've been to the Italy no one else goes to — empty mountains, a quiet coast, and no other tourists.

Skip if

You want major sights, good infrastructure, or a reason beyond the novelty of going somewhere no one else does.
