Pollino National Park

Trip Anchor

The Verdict

Italy's largest national park, in the deep south — the 'pino loricato' (the twisted-bark Bosnian pine), the Ragola gorge, and the wildest of the southern mountains. Worth a couple of days for the wilderness and the off-the-beaten-path.

Why go

For the 'pino loricato' (the twisted-bark pine, the symbol of the park), the gorges, and the wildness of the southern Apennines — the off-the-beaten-path.

The Field Guide take

Spanning the border between Calabria and Basilicata, Pollino National Park is the largest protected area in Italy. It is a sprawling, rugged landscape that defies the Mediterranean stereotypes of Italy. This is a land of massive gorges, high plateaus, and ancient trees, representing the wildest and most isolated section of the southern Apennines.

The Pino Loricato

The true symbol of Pollino is the 'pino loricato,' or Bosnian pine. These trees have a twisted, armored bark that allows them to survive the harsh conditions on the high rocky slopes. Many of these specimens have lived for hundreds of years, standing as sentinels on the ridges. They are a rare sight and provide the mountain landscape with a unique, prehistoric aesthetic that you will not find anywhere else in the country.

Canyons and Gorges

The topography of the park is defined by deep, vertical drops. The Raganello Gorge is a prime example of the intense geological activity that formed the area. The water has carved through limestone over millennia, creating narrow, spectacular canyons. Exploring these requires a good level of physical fitness and sometimes the guidance of local experts, as the terrain can be deceptive and the remote nature of the park means that help is not immediately available.

Off-the-Beaten-Path

Pollino is for the traveler who wants to leave the tourist circuit behind entirely. The infrastructure is minimal, the villages are quiet, and the trails are rarely marked with the precision of the Alpine routes. You will spend your time in vast, empty valleys and silent forests. It is an honest, unvarnished wilderness experience. If you are looking for convenience, this is not the place; if you are looking for solitude in a landscape that has remained largely unchanged for centuries, it is an essential stop.
