Side by Side
Trieste vs Venice
Two Adriatic cities, two hours apart by train. Venice is the fantasy of canals; Trieste is a Habsburg port with a square on the sea and almost no tourists. They're a striking pairing.

Town · Friuli-Venezia Giulia
Trieste
Verdict
Trieste is worth a night or two for travelers who want something different from the standard Italian circuit. It is Austrian, coastal, and caffeinated. Pair with the Carso and Miramare.

Town · Veneto
Venice
Verdict
Venice is worth at least two nights. A day trip from the mainland sells it short — Venice at dawn and after the day-trippers leave is a different city. Stay overnight or don't bother.
Which to choose
Choose Venice for the obvious — there's nothing else like it, and first-timers should not skip it. Choose Trieste if you've already done Venice, or you want a grown-up, caffeinated, Mitteleuropean city with sea air and no crowds. Trieste is the better place to slow down; Venice is the one you can't replace.
