Lake Garda is worth two or three nights, especially for families or travelers who want swimming and beaches alongside the mountain scenery. The south shore is warmer and flatter; the north is dramatic and alpine.

Varenna
Varenna is the best base on Lake Como if you want quiet and train access. It is less glamorous than Bellagio but more livable, and the ferry to Bellagio is 15 minutes.

Bellagio
Bellagio is worth a day or a night as your Lake Como base. It is the most photographed village and the most crowded. Stay overnight to see it empty, or ferry in from Varenna.

Sirmione
Sirmione is worth a half-day on Lake Garda's south shore. The castle and the Roman ruins (Grotte di Catullo) are the essentials. It is crowded in summer; go early.

Lake Como
Lake Como is worth two nights. Base in Bellagio, Varenna, or Menaggio and ferry between villages. You do not need a car — the ferry is the transport. Go in shoulder season; July is crowded and expensive.
Town · Lombardia
Milan
Milan is worth a day or two, particularly as a gateway. The Last Supper alone justifies a stop if you book it ahead. Don't expect the open-air museum feel of Florence — Milan is a working city.
