Side by Side
Cortina vs Courmayeur
Italy's two premier mountain resort towns, in opposite corners of the Alps. Cortina sits in the Dolomites in the northeast; Courmayeur sits under Mont Blanc in the northwest. Both are stylish and expensive.

Town · Veneto
Cortina d'Ampezzo
Verdict
Cortina is worth a night or two as a Dolomites base if you want a town with restaurants and lifts. It is more developed and expensive than the Val di Fassa or Ortisei; go for the setting, not the rusticity.

Town · Valle d'Aosta
Courmayeur
Verdict
The Italian side of Mont Blanc — a polished resort town, but the real draw is the Skyway cable car to Punta Helbronner and the view of the highest peak in the Alps from its south face. Worth it for the mountain.
Which to choose
Choose Cortina d'Ampezzo for the Dolomites' pale spires, a prettier town, and the better beginner-intermediate ski experience. Choose Courmayeur for Mont Blanc, a more serious mountaineering scene, and an easy tunnel-hop from Chamonix. Cortina is the more beautiful resort; Courmayeur is the better base for the biggest mountain in the Alps.
