Museums Worth the Queue (and a Few to Skip)

The museums that repay the line — and the booking strategy that gets you past it.

Curatorial note

The Uffizi and the Vatican deserve their fame and their crowds; book the first slot or weep. The Borghese is timed-entry and the best single hour of art in Rome, the Capitoline is Rome's thinking-person's museum, and the Archaeological Museum in Naples holds the Pompeii frescoes Pompeii itself can't show you.

Capitoline Museums

Museum · Lazio

Capitoline Museums

Essential for anyone who wants to understand ancient Rome rather than just photograph it. Less crowded than the Vatican and better organized for the archaeology.

Galleria dell'Accademia

Museum · Toscana

Galleria dell'Accademia

Worth it for David alone, but the rest is thin and the crowds are punishing. Go early or go late; skip if you cannot get a timed ticket.

Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel

Museum · Lazio

Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel

Essential, but understand it is a marathon. The Sistine Chapel is the climax of a long, crowded corridor. Book a timed entry, accept the crowds, and do not try to see everything.

Uffizi Gallery

Museum · Toscana

Uffizi Gallery

Essential. You cannot understand Florentine art without it, and the early-Renaissance rooms alone justify the trip. Book ahead or you will lose half a day in line.

Galleria Borghese

Gallery · Lazio

Galleria Borghese

The best small museum in Rome. Bernini's Apollo and Daphne alone is worth the timed entry. Booking is mandatory and limited; reserve days ahead.

Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli

Museum · Campania

Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli

Essential if you are visiting Pompeii or Herculaneum — the frescoes and mosaics are here, not on the sites. The Farnese marbles alone justify the entry.

Pompeii

Archaeological Site · Campania

Pompeii

Pompeii is worth a full half-day from Naples. Go early, bring water and a hat — there is little shade. Herculaneum is smaller, better preserved, and less crowded; do both if you can.

Rome

Town · Lazio

Rome

Rome deserves at least three full days and rewards a fourth. It is the one Italian city where trying to see everything is the mistake — pick two major sites a day and leave time for wandering.

Naples

Town · Campania

Naples

Naples is worth two nights and rewards the traveler who doesn't need things tidy. It is the gateway to Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast, and Capri, and it has the best pizza in Italy. Skip it only if you need order and calm.
