Basilicata is for the traveler who's done Puglia and wants to go deeper. Matera is the unmissable draw — one of the most extraordinary cities in Italy — and the rest is empty, mountainous, and raw: Castelmezzano perched in the Lucanian Dolomites, Maratea on the coast, and a cuisine of lamb, peppers, and bread. It's hard to reach and thin on infrastructure, but Matera alone justifies the trip.

Calabria
Calabria is for travelers who've done the famous south (Campania, Puglia) and want the raw version. The coast (Tropea, Scilla) is the draw, the interior mountains (Aspromonte, Sila) are empty, and the food — nduja, swordfish, pecorino — is fiery and excellent. It's poor, the infrastructure is thin, and it's not for a first Italy trip. But it's the most authentic southern Italy you can still have largely to yourself.

Castelmezzano
One of the most beautiful villages in Italy, perched on a peak in the Lucanian Dolomites — and the Angel Flight (Volo dell'Angelo), the world's highest zipline, to the facing village. Worth a night for the mountain and the flight.

Scilla
A fishing village that looks like the Aeolian Islands without the ferry — a castle above, painted boats below, swordfish on the grill. Worth a night if you're in the deep south.

Maratea
The 'Pearl of the Tyrrhenian' — the one stretch of Basilicata coast, with a clifftop old town, a Christ-of-the-Andes-style statue, and hidden coves. Worth a night if you're driving the south.

Tropea
The most photographed spot in Calabria, and it earns it: a clifftop old town above clear blue water. Worth a couple of nights if you're doing the south.
Mountain · Trentino-Alto Adige
Dolomites
The Dolomites are worth three to five nights if you hike. Base in Ortisei or Cortina. A car is essential. Go in summer for hiking or winter for skiing; the shoulder seasons are quiet but lifts may be closed.
Town · Basilicata
Matera
Matera is worth one night, and the night is the point — staying in a cave hotel in the Sassi is an experience found nowhere else. It is a detour from the usual circuit, but a rewarding one.
