Archaeology Beyond Pompeii

Roman and Greek sites that don't require a queue, a skip-the-line ticket, or a crush of selfie sticks.

Curatorial note

Pompeii is extraordinary and exhausting. The experienced move is to pair it with places most first-timers never reach: Ostia Antica for a quieter forum, Paestum for Greek temples that predate the Parthenon, and Hadrian's Villa for imperial ambition on a human scale.

Colosseo

Archaeological Site · Lazio

Colosseo

Essential for a first visit, despite the crowds. Book the underground/arena-level ticket to see the hypogeum; the standard upper-tier ticket is the disappointing one.

Valle dei Templi

Archaeological Site · Sicilia

Valle dei Templi

Essential if you are in western Sicily. Go at sunset for the light and the temperature; midday is exposed and punishing.

Villa Adriana

Archaeological Site · Lazio

Villa Adriana

Essential for anyone interested in ancient Rome beyond the Forum. Vast, shaded, and you will have much of it to yourself.

Foro Romano

Archaeological Site · Lazio

Foro Romano

Essential but hard to read without a guide. Pair with the Colosseum and Palatine on the combined ticket; the view from the Palatine ties it together.

Palatine Hill

Archaeological Site · Lazio

Palatine Hill

Included on the Colosseum/Forum combined ticket. Walk up for the view; the palace ruins are fragmentary but the panorama is the point.

Paestum

Archaeological Site · Campania

Paestum

Essential if you are on the Cilento or Amalfi coast. The temples are more intact than Agrigento's and far less crowded.

Ostia Antica

Archaeological Site · Lazio

Ostia Antica

Ostia Antica is the best day trip from Rome if you've already seen the major sites. It is Pompeii without the travel time or the crowds. Go in the morning; bring water.

Pompeii

Archaeological Site · Campania

Pompeii

Pompeii is worth a full half-day from Naples. Go early, bring water and a hat — there is little shade. Herculaneum is smaller, better preserved, and less crowded; do both if you can.
