Rome & the Lazio Outback
6 days — Rome, then the lakes, hill towns, and Etruscan country an hour outside it.
Curatorial note
Do Rome properly, then get out of it. Bracciano and Bolsena for volcanic lakes, Tivoli for the villas, and Civita di Bagnoregio for the dying town on a rock. A car for the last three days; the train for the rest.

Lazio
Most visitors come for Rome and leave — and that's fine, Rome alone is worth a week. But Lazio hides a worthwhile second trip: the gardens of Tivoli, the lakes of Bracciano and Bolsena, and the dying-on-a-rock town of Civita di Bagnoregio. It's a region to revisit once you've done the capital, not a substitute for it.

Civita di Bagnoregio
Civita di Bagnoregio is worth a detour if you're between Orvieto and Rome. The footbridge approach and the eroding tufa setting are unforgettable. It's small — an hour is enough.

Town · Lazio
Tivoli
Tivoli is worth a day trip from Rome if you have extra time. Villa d'Este's fountains and Hadrian's Villa are both extraordinary. Do both in a day; take the train or a tour.

Rome
Rome deserves at least three full days and rewards a fourth. It is the one Italian city where trying to see everything is the mistake — pick two major sites a day and leave time for wandering.
