Matera vs Alberobello
Two of southern Italy's stone-built wonders, both in the deep south. Matera is a cave city carved into a ravine; Alberobello is a town of whitewashed trulli cones. Both are UNESCO-listed and both get busy.
Curatorial note
Choose Matera for the scale and the drama — it's a whole carved city you can stay in overnight, and it rewards two days. Choose Alberobello for the trulli, but know it's largely a day-trip destination and the most photographed zones are a theme park by midday. If you can only do one, Matera is the deeper experience; see Alberobello as a half-day stop on the way elsewhere.

Town · Puglia
Alberobello
Alberobello is worth a half-day stop. The trulli are genuinely unique and worth seeing, but the town is touristy. Go early, walk both districts, and don't stay overnight unless you want to sleep in a trullo.

Town · Basilicata
Matera
Matera is worth one night, and the night is the point — staying in a cave hotel in the Sassi is an experience found nowhere else. It is a detour from the usual circuit, but a rewarding one.
